Jaime Mears among a flock of sheep, in black and white

What is Bouffon?

What is Bouffon?

Bouffon is the anarchic, and most clever cousin of clown.

The outcast. The trickster. The mirror.

Bouffon looks at the world we have made and reflects it back to us, bigger, stranger and considerably less polite. Through parody, transformation, play and the grotesque, the Bouffon exposes our absurdities, hypocrisies and taboos, not from a position of moral superiority, but with enormous pleasure in the game.

It is a form that asks the performer to be

bold, beautiful, ridiculous, dangerous and completely alive.

Beauty and the grotesque sit side by side. Bouffon plays with power: who holds it, who obeys it, and who is permitted to laugh. Its rebellion is theatrical, not a lecture. The audience is seduced into complicity, then asked to recognise itself in the game.

What Bouffon can do for an actor

What Bouffon can do for an actor

The work sharpens ensemble awareness: listening to an impulse, sharing focus and sensing when to support or disrupt the game. Physical and imaginative range grow alongside comic intelligence, courage and the freedom to stop being an obedient performer.

01 — SIZE

01 — SIZE

Bouffon asks the actor to become bigger. To stop apologising for the body. To follow an impulse beyond the point of good taste. To discover the grotesque can be gorgeous, failure can be fertile, and that what first appears ridiculous may contain enormous theatrical power.

02 — RISK

02 — RISK

Bouffon develops an actor’s appetite for risk, scale, pleasure and danger. It demands direct contact with an audience and the magnetic complicity required to hold them there. The performer learns to seduce and attack, to parody, provoke, expose and play, while remaining exquisitely sensitive to what is actually happening in the room.

03 —LIBERATION

03 —LIBERATION

Actors spend an extraordinary amount of time learning how to get things right. To be truthful. To be tasteful. To make the clever choice. To be castable, likeable, believable. Bouffon pulls the rug out from under all of that. For an actor, this can be profoundly liberating. The range gets wider. The choices get bolder. The body becomes more available. The imagination becomes less obedient.

You stop asking, “Am I doing this right?” and start asking, “How far can this go?”

A WORKSHOP CAMPAIGN

Odd One Out

Odd One Out

The outsider notices what everyone else has agreed not to see. The nonconformist refuses the expected shape. Odd One Out is an invitation to work with that difference: to make the strange, the unruly and the inconvenient part of your theatrical language.

About Jaime Mears

About Jaime Mears

Jaime Mears is an Australian actor, director and internationally recognised theatre teacher whose work sits at the intersection of Bouffon, Clown, Le Jeu, improvisation and physical theatre.

A graduate of NIDA and a Churchill Fellow, Jaime spent two years training at École Philippe Gaulier in Paris, before being invited to assist Philippe Gaulier himself in Neutral Mask and Greek Tragedy in 2010. Her subsequent training has included work with Anne Bogart and SITI Company, Keith Johnstone and Complicité.

Over more than twenty years as a performer and teacher, Jaime has taught actors, theatre-makers and professional clowns across Australia, the UK, Canada, the USA, Portugal, Denmark, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Latvia, Hungary, Finland, Russia and beyond. Her teaching has taken her from drama schools and independent actor-training studios to international theatre companies and some of Europe’s leading healthcare-clown organisations.

What distinguishes Jaime as a teacher is not simply her technical knowledge, but her ability to create the conditions in which performers become braver, more playful and more theatrically alive. Her teaching is rigorous without becoming rigid, irreverent without becoming careless, and deeply attentive to the individual performer. She has a particular gift for recognising where an actor is playing safe, then finding the game, provocation or permission that allows something much larger to appear.

Eight years of professional hospital clowning inform Jaime’s attention to the person in front of her: listening, adapting and finding the game together. In the studio, technical rigour meets playfulness and risk. Individual attention helps each performer develop their own theatrical language rather than reproduce somebody else’s.
